Libby Young's paddling journey is a testament to passion, dedication, and the joy of discovery for paddling. Her story began as a small child, perched on the back of her dad's sit-on-top kayak, soaking in the excitement of the water. These early experiences ignited a spark that would grow into a lifelong love for kayaking.

At just eight years old, Libby took her first independent paddle strokes during holiday clubs. The thrill of maneuvering a kayak was infectious, and by the age of 11, she was eager to delve deeper into the sport. Joining several clubs with her dad, Libby quickly found herself captivated by the adrenaline rush of white-water kayaking. The challenge and excitement of navigating rapids were a perfect match for her adventurous spirit.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, many of us sought new ways to stay active and engaged. For Libby, this meant trying her hand at slalom kayaking. While slalom might not have been her favorite, it played a crucial role in honing her paddling skills. The precision and technique required in slalom kayaking sharpened her abilities, making her a more versatile and skilled paddler.

The real turning point in Libby's kayaking journey came in 2022 when she discovered freestyle kayaking. This dynamic and expressive form of the sport felt like a perfect fit. The freedom to perform tricks and maneuvers in the water resonated deeply with her, transforming her relationship with kayaking from a mere hobby to a full-blown passion.

Libby's dedication and talent did not go unnoticed. In April of this year, her hard work paid off when she qualified for the GB team in freestyle kayaking. This incredible achievement has set the stage for her to compete in the European Championships this summer in Austria. The excitement and anticipation for what's to come are palpable as she prepares to represent her country on the international stage.

Libby's paddling journey has been supported by several key organizations. She trains with North Avon, Seren Dwr, and Stroud Valley Canoe Club, where she received her introduction to slalom. Her current involvement in the Burners programme has provided her with the resources and community to continue growing as an athlete.

As Libby looks forward to the European Championships and beyond, her story serves as an inspiration to paddlers of all ages. Her journey from a curious child on the back of a kayak to a competitive freestyle champion underscores the importance of passion, perseverance, and the joy of the sport.
